Where to start when writing indoor percussion show music? Percussion. I am a freshman in high school and have fallen in love with marching and drumline. I have started to write music for shows for fun. I normally write the show as if drumline doesn't exist, then add the drumline. It seems for wgi that is a bad idea. An indoor percussion ensemble or indoor drumline consists of the marching percussion (or battery) and front ensemble (pit or frontline) sections of a marching band or drum corps.The only exceptions are in concert divisions (e.g. Percussion Scholastic Concert Open) where the marching line is absent and the ensemble consists entirely of a pit.

The thing to understand first and foremost about writing drill for indoor percussion is that it is VERY different than writing for band or corps. I’ve seen quite a few high school bands just stick their drumline in the back in a line or “drumline block” and have them just move around the field, hardly ever changing the order they’re in.
